Liner Notes + Motivations
- The music gathered will represent the theme behind our setting and characters in the North Pole, as well as being able to tie back to the original themes of the play
- Ice, Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
- This song is intended to be the theme for the Jack Frost, as, firstly, the song’s name is “Ice, Ice Baby.” Because Jack Frost is playing Egeus, Hermia’s unreasonable father, this song conveys his tough side, as the lyrics prove a hardened man. For example, one line says “light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle,” projecting this rugged attitude that connects back to Egeus.

- Pray for the Drip (ft. Offset) - Tee Grizzley
- This song is in here because it calls back to the theme of our adaptation, in which we utilize the North Pole as our scene. Praying for the drip is supposed to mean that someone is yearning longingly for the drip, and in this case, the drip represents lust/love/romance, as this is the main theme of the play that all characters commonly search for.

- Circle of Bosses (ft. Quavo) - Young Thug
- I chose this thong to represent Theseus and Hippolyta as their theme. This is due to, as the name states, they are in the circle of bosses, which is supposed to mean the powerful group of higher-ups. A few lyrics that connect back to our play include “Pull all of my whips out, I make the North look a little awesome”, “can't pull up on me, come get your chips”, “I close my fist (close), my ice, it make an announcement (ice, ice).” These lines convey the metaphorical power these characters have, as they are essentially in control of the show, making them very significant, and apart of the “Circle of Bosses”

- Hopeless Romantic (ft. Swae Lee) - Wiz Khalifa
- This song was chosen for Helena, as she is a hopeless romantic, just as the name suggests. For one of the lines in the song, it even conveys Demetrius’ feelings for Helena, as it states “Seems like I'm always chosen by romantics that are hopeless,” conveying that Helena is not the intended desire of Demetrius.

- All Time Low - Jon Bellion
- Just like “Hopeless Romantic,” I utilized this song to represent the idea of wavering romantic circumstances between the characters. Primarily, this song focuses on the confusing relationships between the characters.
- “I, I, I, I've been trying to fix my pride, but that thing’s broken, that thing’s broken”
- The prides of characters are broken, such as Helena, because of confusing relationships and tensions.

- “Now all your girlfriends say that you don't want to see me, you're the reason that I just can't concentrate”
- This conveys the idea of a lost relationship, exemplifying the breaking relationships that play out.

- Hotline Bling - Drake
- Hotline Bling was one of my choices for this play as it allows for the feelings of shattered hearts and crushed relationships. Drake, in this song, discusses his ex who ditched him, leaving him to sulk in his hurt feelings. One line that helps convey this is “you used to call me on my cell phone, late night when you need my love.”

- Fine By Me - Andy Grammer
- This song was perfect for this play, as with a few of my other selections, it implies strong feelings of romance. It shows the lust one feels over someone they feel is perfect for them. In this song, Andy Grammer says “I'm just saying it's fine by me, if you never leave, and we can live like this forever, it's fine by me,” which could quite possibly reflect not only Helena’s desire for Demetrius, but also Demetrius’ lust for Hermia, as well as the romance other characters feel for each other.

- Antidote - Travis Scott
- This song was chosen in order to allow Puck’s theme to come to light, which has to do with potions. Since Puck utilizes this magic, this song seemed like a pretty good fit for him. One line that stood out to convey his ideals is “anything can happen at the night show,” representing the idea that anything can happen at the “night show” (the play), and that nothing, especially magic, is unexpected.

- This Could Be Us - Rae Sremmurd
- Just as the other songs, the utilization of this song is motivated by the lust found between characters. Specifically, I feel that this resembled Helena’s deep obsession for Demetrius, as she wants them to be involved and together, but it is unlikely, bringing it back to the significance of the title of the song, “This COULD Be Us,” with emphasis on the could.
- “Improvise, look me in my eyes and lie to me, lie to me, act like I'll believe anything”
- Intended to convey the idea of false love, as such is experienced in the play

- Ice, Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
- The reasoning behind why these songs were chosen was not only due to the themes behind the play, but because metaphorically, they all can connect back to our adaptation. For example, “Ice, Ice Baby,” as well as “Pray for the Drip” call back to our use of the North Pole, as well as being able to represent a theme of the play or a character. I chose the songs also based on how specific characters might feel or what the overall tone of the play is, such as “Hotline Bling,” reflecting the possible lust that is felt between characters. Overall, the way I chose the songs was intended to not only represent the setting, but also the overall idea of our adaptation, tying in both the character’s feelings as well as the themes of the play.
